US President Donald Trump has indicated that the state visit next week by King Charles and Queen Camilla could 'absolutely' be beneficial for mending relations with the UK.
In a phone interview with the BBC, Trump affirmed his belief in the visit's potential, stating: Absolutely. He's fantastic. He's a fantastic man. Absolutely the answer is yes. He elaborated, emphasizing his long-standing acquaintance with the King, describing him as 'brave' and 'great', and expressing hope for a positive outcome from their meeting.
King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to visit the United States for four days, starting Monday, where they will meet Trump at the White House, and the King will also deliver an address to Congress.
During the segment, Trump discussed his relationship with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suggesting that the latter could improve his position by adjusting on immigration policies. He noted that if Starmer strengthened UK immigration, he could 'recover' politically.
The imminent royal visit occurs against the backdrop of Trump's previous criticisms of the UK government’s involvement in international conflicts, particularly in relation to the ongoing tensions regarding the Iran war. Trump has previously expressed dissatisfaction over the UK's support during these critical geopolitical issues.
The visit will also celebrate the 250th anniversary of US independence, with the Foreign Office aiming to highlight a partnership rooted in 'shared prosperity, security, and history'. Following their time in Washington, the King and Queen plan to continue to New York, Virginia, and Bermuda before returning to the UK.
Trump's comments, as he affirms the relationship with the monarchy, suggest a strategic approach to reviving transatlantic ties amid complex challenges between the two nations. He has prompted the UK government to enhance oil and gas extraction in the North Sea and has been vocal about the need for stronger allied support regarding global military engagements.
