In brief

In a week of anguish, South Africa experienced two mass shootings within hours, claiming 27 lives and injuring dozens. The first attack took place at a Johannesburg bar, while the second struck outside an entertainment venue near Cape Town. Police have yet to find a clear motive, and no arrests have been made. The incidents underscore the country’s persistent gun violence and gang‑related turf wars. The government has deployed the military alongside police to curb rising murders.

Twenty-seven people were killed in two mass shootings that took place hours apart in South Africa, the latest wave of gun violence that has gripped the nation for decades.

The first attack unfolded at a bar near Johannesburg. Eight gunmen stormed the venue, opened fire on customers outside, then entered the premises where they killed seventeen people and injured fifteen. Police said thirteen men and four women lost their lives, but the motive remains unclear.

In the early hours of Sunday, a separate shooting outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town resulted in ten deaths and eleven injuries. Five victims died at the scene and another five succumbed in hospital. No arrests have yet been made.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with about sixty murders recorded daily in a population of 62 million. Gun violence is often linked to turf wars among gangs involved in drug trafficking and illegal mining.

In February, President Cyril Ramaphosa warned that organised crime is the most immediate threat to the country’s democracy, society and economy. Earlier this year, the military was deployed alongside police in high‑rate murder areas to curb armed violence.

The two mass shootings followed an incident in Durban where eleven people were killed when gunmen stormed a house in a township, highlighting the escalating violence in South Africa.
