In brief
A woman in her 40s was pronounced dead in a Killarney housing estate, sparking an urgent police investigation. The victim, Jamey Carney, originally from New York, had relocated to Ireland five years earlier. Gardaí have identified a suspect who has fled the country, allegedly taking a bus to Dublin then a flight to the Middle East, purportedly Jordan. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan confirmed that Gardaí will engage with their Jordanian counterparts and use Interpol and Europol to pursue the case, though no extradition treaty exists between Ireland and Jordan. The investigation continues as Gardaí pursue every possible lead.
The Gardaí announced that they would be engaging with their Jordanian counterparts as part of a murder investigation following the death of a woman in Killarney, County Kerry.
The victim, named Jamey Carney, was in her 40s and had been living with her daughter in the area for about five years after moving from New York. She was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting immediate police response.
On Thursday the Gardaí reported that a man who might be linked to the murder had already left the jurisdiction. According to RTÉ, the suspect allegedly took a bus to Dublin and then a flight to the Middle East, reportedly of Jordanian origin.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan assured the public that the Gardaí would pursue the suspect wherever he is located. “No matter where you are, the Gardaí will seek to pursue you,” he said, highlighting the utilisation of Interpol and Europol to assist the investigation.
There is no extradition treaty between Ireland and Jordan, which the minister acknowledged could complicate legal processes. Nonetheless, O’Callaghan emphasised that the Garda Commissioner’s global connections would be used to secure cooperation from foreign law‑enforcement partners.
The suspect has not been named publicly by the Gardaí and remains a person of interest in the investigation. The ongoing inquiry aims to bring justice to Jamey Carney’s family and the wider community that was left stunned by the tragedy.
