In brief

Gary "Angry" Anderson, the charismatic frontman of Rock hard band Rose Tattoo, passed away aged 79 after suffering cardiac arrest during a European tour. The singer’s solo track 'Suddenly', which played in the 1988 Neighbours wedding episode of Superman and Scott Robinson, led to international chart success and cemented his place in pop culture history. Tributes from fellow musicians, fans, and industry figures highlighted his influence, generosity and community work. Anderson had been honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia for his charitable and youth advocacy efforts. His death marks the end of an era for Australian rock and the memories he left behind.

Gary "Angry" Anderson, the iconic frontman of Australian hard‑rock group Rose Tattoo, died on 22 September 2026 aged 79. He suffered a cardiac arrest while on stage during the band’s farewell tour across Europe earlier that month.

Anderson, whose real name was Gary Anderson, first rose to prominence in 1976 with Rose Tattoo, a hard‑rock outfit that released five albums beginning with the 1978 debut Rock 'n' Roll Tattoo. In 1987 the singer launched his solo career with the single "Suddenly." The track, written by Anderson and credited to his bandmates, gained worldwide recognition after it was chosen by actress Kylie Minogue for the 1988 Neighbours episode in which her character Charlene Mitchell marries fellow cast member Jason Donovan’s character Scott Robinson. The episode attracted 20 million viewers in the United Kingdom and turned the song into a chart‑topping hit in both Australia and the UK, though it was edged out of the Australian number‑one spot by Minogue’s own debut solo single, "Locomotion".

Anderson’s influence extended beyond music. In 1993 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his community service and advocacy work for youth. In addition to his music career, he played the role of Herod in an Australian production of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

His death was mourned by fellow artists and the public. Jason Donovan posted a tribute on Instagram, describing Anderson as "Legend! What a great guy... Another great Australian. Thank you Angry for all the wonderful music and memories." The band’s official statement highlighted that Anderson was "a devoted father, and much‑loved bandmate" and that his loss would be deeply felt by those in Australia and overseas. Survivors and colleagues expressed gratitude for prayers and messages of support following the announcement.

Rose Tattoo, with Anderson’s leadership, played a pivotal role in Australian rock history, touring with international acts such as Guns N' Roses in 1993 and receiving induction into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame in 2006. The band disbanded in the mid‑1980s, reuniting in 1993, and continuing to record and tour until Anderson’s passing in 2026.
